To finish education

volunteer or do service

no way sending daughter away

revolutionaries taking care of her     

             indoctrinate kids                 

Maybe they’ll excuse us

some type of special permission from Tio Antonio

can't count on anyone anymore

    This scene is an example of how important tolerance is because the soldiers wouldn't let Lucia continue her education if they did not support the revolution. The main reason as to why they took Lucia's papa away wasn't just because of the jewelry he hid, but also that he wasn't a supporter of the revolution. The government lacked tolerance and would kill anyone who didn't. Another example would be on page 54 when Doc Machado was hung just because he was planning a peaceful protest against the revolution.

''He wanted a simple, peaceful protest to give voice to what so many feel is a betrayal of what the revolution was suppose to do.''

''They didn't care'' meaning that the government didn't care if it was peaceful or if it was violent it was because he thought differently from the government which gave them a ''good'' reason to end Doc Machado's life.

A Glimmer of Light

Couples twirling

under quiet skies

on a tropical island

wearing beautiful dresses.

But the dark Castro

has led a revolution

corrupting Cuba’s youth

and putting innocents in jail

shivers running down spines

the worst has become a reality.

With the revolution

there will be no celebration

but instead, mourning.

Yet there is still hope

inside intricate snowflakes

some people never even glimpsed

there may be pains

but in the end

everything will be alright.

Found poem inspired by Christina Gonzalez's The Red Umbrella

I chose this scene for my poem for many reasons. First, the scene has many emotions and detailed word describing those feelings. This helps to create a more vivid poem that affects your emotions. Next, it shows the dreams of Lucia, how they were destroyed, and then restored. Finally, this was an important scene from the book for its self to self conflict about the Baxters and Lucia’s own family.  This scene communicates an important lesson about tolerance. Although it was Lucia’s birthday and she couldn’t celebrate in Cuba, she moved on and had a happy day. She tolerated the thought of not celebrating her birthday with her parents and Ivette, and Castro corrupting Ivette. She does this clearly by playing in the snow with Frankie and admitting that it wasn’t a horrible day near the end of the paragraph. The segment also shows empathy. When Lucia plays in the snow, she remembers her parents and how they never seen snow before. She gets a “sharp pain” in her throat, which shows that she is empathizing with them by sharing the feelings. The text also states in the same paragraph ‘My chest tightened. I couldn’t breathe. Feelings of sadness and joy overwhelmed me. I missed Mamá and Papá so much, yet the Baxters were such kind people that I couldn’t be completely unhappy.’ . This is another good example that Lucia feels empathy for her parents. To sum up, my poem demonstrates tolerance and empathy.

Found poem inspired by Christina Gonzalaz's The Red Umbrella

 

        This scene was chosen because it shows Lucia being accepted as an American in her school. She made friends and they accepted her as a friend. Also, this scene connects with tolerance and empathy by her friends understanding how hard it would be without friends. Lucia's friends also understood how she had to leave her home and her parents for a safer life. So they wanted her to have a good stay in America, and Nebraska. That is why this scene was chosen and how it connects empathy and tolerance.

This poem shows empathy towards the book the red umbrella by describing on page 179 what the summer was like in Cuba before Lucia and Frankie got sent to America. It was saying that the summer was coming to an end and fall and winter was coming back around again. Frankie and Lucia were for from were they lived during the Cuban revolution when Castro over threw Batista. They were kept in a like a school for them down in Cuba.

A Car

If the weather clears up

this weekend

I'd teach you to drive

I wasn't sure if i understand correctly

Even mama didn't know how to drive

Mr. Baxter nodded

You can get your learners permit

I jumped up and gave him a hug

Well yes, that'll do

The found poem is how Lucia is excited because Mr.Baxter will let her try to drive his car. This was a gift to her from Mr.Baxter for her birthday. The moment was on the page 220-221. she was so happy that she couldn't say anything because she was speech less. Even though that Mr.Baxter is not her father she was still pretty happy.

Plane engine humming

A big red umbrella appeared in the bright blue sky,

That stupid thing never looked so beautiful.

A smile edging its way onto my face

Found poem inspired by: Cristina Diaz Gonzalez’s Red Umbrella

This poem is describing how much immigrants leave behind to have freedom. As Americans, we can take freedom for granted. It also show how things like an umbrella can mean so much to people, and describes a certain moment. In this poem Lucia leaves everything she knows to be free of the revolution. Mama needs a way to say goodbye her way was to revel the red umbrella. This is a very important symbol in the story because it represents the strength and unity of her family.

This is a really good section from the book to choose because of multiple reasons. One being that this was the first time that Lucia met / was introduced to Eddie. Eddie is showing empathy for Lucia because he is from a different country and because she is new. This also shows empathy because no one else was going to introduce themselves. It shows tolerance to, because he is tolerating a new kid to the class. This section show empathy because the class is not drawing attention to her. This show tolerance because Lucia is tolerating the teacher when the teacher singled her out. This is why the section is important.
