I Remember Poem
By: Emma Adams
I remember Mauna Kea's 50th Anniversary in Hawaii,
The way the plumeria tickled my nose as I placed it behind my ear
And how the fire smelled as it raged across the mountain.
I remember the saltwater on my lips
Like a bitter lemon squeezed into the ocean.
The orchids touch, delicate and soft on my skin
The flower was a fragile butterfly, on its first flight.
I remember the 50,000 flowers drifting down from the helicopter
How we ran to collect the flowers for our leis.
Racing back and forth across the beach.
There's no place I'd rather be.
