The Red Umbrella Found Poem
Hallways emptying,
Students went to classes
"You're nothing special Cubanita."
"You probably never where!"
"Shes trying to get to you"
Betty's words
Cut me to the bone
Just something to break the monotony of every day
I Could barely concentrate in class
All insecurities felt exposed
This scene depicts Lucia being bullied by a pupil. Betty's words felt appropriate to the theme of treating others differently. Insecurities where a main part which were caused by others tendencies. After the words are said, Lucias friends Jennifer shows empathy by telling her shes just trying to get to her. "Cut me to the bone" shows that she took the words hard. Lucia must have had little experience with race/ethnicity discrimination. Looking back, I mentioned that Jennifer showed empathy. She was trying to comfort Lucia, despite being from a different background. This shows that Jennifer was not prejudiced towards Lucias background. Tolerance comes into place after this scene when Lucia sits down with Jennifer friends.
