Indulge

My thoughts swirl
My heartbeat quickened
It was silly for me to imagine
Wearing those pretty linen clothes
Rich, crisp
I breathed a sigh of relief, glanced up
Saw sea air, crinkled sand
I felt rich

The scene this poem takes place in is when Frankie and Lucia are moving to America and they are waiting to meet the Baxters for the first time. This scene represents empathy. Mr. and Mrs. Baxter did a good deed when they decided to take in Frankie and Lucia, and they tried as hard as they could to understand their situation. Although no one is perfect, the Baxters did a great job welcoming Lucia and Frankie and helping through their tough times. Their empathy for the children was shown explicitly throughout the book, but this scene seemed to fit the best because it was the start of the new family's time together, and just by taking them in, the Baxters have already shown how much they care. This poem reflects the Baxter's empathy because it is narrated by Lucia, who says that she feels alone in this new place, but the Baxters help the children become more used to the situation. In conclusion, this scene shows empathy in more ways than one.
