Pd: 3 Fung, J Found poem

A Beach

"So nice you know English,
so quiet around here."

Picked up a sponge and gave me a towel,
"Tell me" she said,
"Where are you from?"

"Porto Me-ha-res"

"It's east of Havana,
on a bitch,"
I explained.

"Oh my! No! Never say that."
She pointed to her lips.
"Be-e-each.
"Now you."

"Be-e-each," I said,
contorting my mouth.

"What about your house, big like this or little?"

"More big. "Not much land."

"Bigger, not more big."

Found Poem in inspired by Christina Diaz Gonzalez's "The Red Umbrella"

This scene shows people a very important lesson on tolerance. Here Lucia messes up by saying bitch instead of what she actually meant, beach. Mrs. Baxter tolerated her saying that because she knows that Lucia isn't that good at speaking English yet. When she heard Lucia saying that Mrs.Baxter didn't punish her, but corrected her. This shows how tolerant Mrs. Baxter was. Many parents if their child said that, even for the first time, would probably punish them instead of correcting them and telling them that it isn't a word that they should use. Mrs. Baxter also displayed this trait when she was correcting Lucia for saying "More big." This is what parents should do instead of punishing their children. It teaches their kids not to say it and that punishing a child isn't the only way that they can learn.
