The Red Umbrella: Found Poem
The Baxters
paying for a call to Cuba
to wish Mama and Papa Feliz Navidad.
I looked at the Baxters,
beaming
“Thank you so much,”
“That’s the best gift of all.”
My scene demonstrates empathy and tolerance really well. The Baxters are empathetic, so they chose to pay for a call, rather than making the kids pay for it themselves. Lucia and Frankie understand that it is hard to move 1,500 miles away from a home. They have just moved to an unfamiliar, new place that they are forced to call home. Lucia and Frankie tolerated this very well. They adjusted to a new life. It communicates super clearly that if you are empathetic and can tolerate rough times, things find a way to work out. That is how this scene demonstrates empathy and toleration.
