The Rhythm of Life
A couple hundred miles away
everything more sterile,
walking around
noticing the rhythm of life.
The pulsing sound of Spanish
or the music that surprised ears.
Passing by an open window
something was missing.
Sounds of cars filled the air,
Miami was different.
I tried hard
but I couldn't get the pulse of the city.
This found poem was inspired by Christina Gonzalez's "The Red Umbrella"
I choose this scene from the book because of many reasons. First, it had a lot of detail and good vocabulary. Also, it had a certain flow to it that would be easily developed into a great poem. Finally, it showed emotion that felt real. So that made this poem realistic and relatable. This poem demonstrates the lesson about empathy and tolerance very well. It demonstrates tolerance by showing how Lucia is tolerating how she feels about Miami. It shows empathy by Lucia noticing how others feel about their home and her being able to share those feelings by the way she feels about her home. In conclusion, this poem fits the lesson of empathy and tolerance, and it was also well chosen.
