One Way Conversation
Lucia and Francisco-
welcome to America.
We're your foster family.
So do you have many bags?
I'd expect you don't.
I've read some horrible things
about what's happening in Cuba.
You must be happy
to be out of there.
You'll be safe with us.
Poem inspired by Christina Gonzalez's The Red Umbrella
In the scene chosen, Lucia and Frankie are in America for the first time, meeting their foster family. They are experiencing something completely new. Selected because it's when Lucia and Frankie get their first taste of their new life, this scene shows how they started (as compared to how they grew). This scene shows the kids being treated differently, but simultaneously the same as everyone else. Mrs. Baxter is speaking to them in English. Lucia and Frankie are treated with empathy, but also slight misunderstanding. Mrs. Baxter understands their situation, but doesn't know how they feel about it. The scene shows how people shouldn't assume they know how others are feeling, and how those feelings should be taken into consideration.
