                                                                         The Large Red Umbrella
                                                                               Help her adjust
                                                                                     to life
                                                                                 from Cuba
 
                                                                              The newspapers
                                                                                  told about
                                                                            the situation there

                                                                             She needs help
                                                                                 all of you
                                                                            should assist her

                                                                        Being singled out was
                                                                        the last thing I wanted

                                                                                I sank down
                                                                                 and prayed
                                                                               everyone would
                                                                                  go back to
                                                                          what they were doing
                                                                                         
                    Found poem inspired by Christina Gonzalez’s "The Red Umbrella"

This was a scary time for Lucia because she was the new student and she didn't know anyone at her new school. She already knew that she had an accent and that she didn't have very nice clothes. She wanted to fit in but the teacher told everyone that they had to help her if she needed help with anything. The teacher was almost showing her off to the class like she was an animal in a pet store.
