Welcome to America
By Hayden DelCiello
Petite older woman
short blond hair
waved
said something.
Big smile
showed all teeth
threw open arms
like a magician’s assistant.
Welcome
to America.
Found poem inspired
by Christina Gonzalez’s The Red Umbrella
The found poem was from pages 150
and 151. I chose this scene because Mrs. Baxter showed immediate acceptance of
Frankie and Lucia Alvarez. Mrs. Baxter treated them as if she had already known
them, but haven’t seen them for a long time.
She smiled, laughed, and conversed to learn more about them while
keeping the mood jubilant. The poem how to welcome somebody to a new area. It
was about how Mrs. Baxter welcomed Lucia and Frankie to Nebraska. There were
multiple examples of how to make a person feel welcomed and accepted in a new
environment such as “Big smile”. “Welcome to America” was meant to teach
acceptance of others.
