PD2; George Li's Found Poem

A Battle at Home
By: George Li

“¡Mi hija! We’re here!”

Soldiers were making a mess of the house.

Papá sat at the dining room table with his hands cuffed behind him.

What did you do?” Ivette’s mother asked.

"We did nothing"

Officer chuckled. “Nothing, eh?

"You can’t trust people like this."

“You mean good people who you’ve known your whole life. People who don’t follow every little thing Fidel says. Who actually have minds and question what is happening?

“Vámonos, Ivette. There’s no getting through to them. They’re just like the Yankee imperialistas.

Ivette stood frozen by the doorway as her mother walked out.

Inspired by Christina Gonzalez’s The Red Umbrella
Found on pages 88-89
This found poem was from pages 88 and 89. I chose this scene because of Ivette's aftermath reaction to the situation. Her family rejects Lucia's family and attempts to convince Ivette that she should to. This is clearly shown when Lucia's family was called a YANKEE IMPERIALISTAS. Even if there family kept quite at that moment, the arrest could have lead to Ivette's change of heart. Even with all this, Ivette is shocked, but has not taken a side because of tolerance shown on pages 88-89.
