PD 6 Sam S. Found poem/paragraph

He’s My Father

Are you related to Fernando Alvarez?
“He's my father”
The last time i saw you, you were were only four
The one i told you about
Why i took this job
He paid for my youngest's medicine
He didn't want to be repaid
Said that someday, I'd help another child
And that would be payment enough

-Inspiration: The Red Umbrella-

This poem shows empathy and tolerance through its text and hidden meaning. Inspired by The Red Umbrella, pages 144-145, this scene was chosen for quite a few reasons. First off, at this moment in the book, an old family friend of Lucia Alvarez’s father, Mr. Ramirez, is helping her and her brother stay together because of the debt he still owes the Lucia;s family. The debt being that Lucia’s father, Fernando, payed for medicine that was given to Mr. Ramirez’s son to help him regain strength. After helping Mr. Ramirez out, Fernando then tells him that he doesn't want to be repaid in money. Rather, he tells Mr. R that one day, he'll help out another kid, and that will be repayment enough. Fernando is showing empathy along with understanding and tolerance  through how understanding he is towards Mr. R when it comes to how his son’s health is. Now it's Mr. R’s turn to help a child, or rather children; his job is to keep Lucia and her brother together while they’re in America. There are plenty of other examples of tolerance and empathy throughout the book, but I feel like this scene is best fit.
