Pd:3, Ava T. A Found Poem

Away

Warm summer days became hot summer weeks,

but cool nights were a reminder of being far from home.

A home that seemed to drift farther away.

Push away fears of never seeing parents again.
Hope that going back

was quickly fading.

Promises made of helping less fortunate sounded good at the time that losing

some freedoms didn't seem too high of a price to pay.

Description
The poem "Away" was based on pages 179 and 180 of Red Umbrella. This scene captures the picture of when Lucía is thinking to herself about how far away from home she is, and if she will ever see her parents again. She ponders about what it is like in Cuba, while reading the Cuban newspaper. Lucía wants to go home very badly, but she knows that it is highly unlikely. Reading the newspaper makes her think about rivalry between Cuba and the United States. She realized that when Castro and Che promised to help the less fortunate sounded like a good idea at the time. Both Frankie and Lucía show tolerance by staying in the U.S. and obeying their parents. This poem shows empathy on Lucía's behalf because she can understand how immigrants feel as they travel from Cuba to the U.S. In conclusion, Lucía is treated differently by other students because they are not empathetic towards her. The students don't understand how much pressure Lucía is under. Lucía and Frankie show empathy and tolerance throughout the book and they show how they feel about the situation they are in.
