New Home, New Food, New Everything
Nothing special,
a Cubanita,
barely concentrating,
insecurities exposing,
chattering voices greeting.
The usual peanut butter and jelly sandwich,
far from what I was used to in Cuba,
Now I actually liked it.
Found poem inspired by Cristina Gonzalez
This poem shows how Lucia is getting used to the food that Americans eat. After Betty was trying to hurt her feelings, Lucia realizes that the people at school are very different then in Cuba. She is very nervous about how people will treat her because of that. Next, Lucia focuses on her food, she states that it is the "usual peanut butter and jelly sandwich" because in Cuba, people don't usually eat those types of food. Those are reasons why this poem demonstrates empathy and tolerance.
