PD 1: Beirne, Emily (Found poem)

Things are better here

everything is so dangerous
so many awful,
violent people

how are you surviving?
haven’t been caught in
any race riots

forget about leaving
things are better
here

escape that nightmare
need to survive
but the very bottom of the page

three words
sent a chill down my
spine

¡Viva la revolución!

This scene in the book was very hard for Lucia to hear. Her best friend Ivette was trying to convince her to come back to Cuba, explaining how things are better in Cuba. The scene shows tolerance when Lucia had to tolerate Ivette’s stereotypical facts. Ivette has never been to the USA and was saying how much better Cuba is. Lucia wanted to stay in America, but when Ivette said all those things about America, it didn't sound like Ivette.
