"Alone In The Summer"

Everyone know each other's business,
spending the summer
at St. Mary's.
You wanted to be left alone,
never came outside to the fountain,
stayed in the social hall after Mass.
You were just shy,
I looked at my notebook
and relaxed little.
They should've introduced themselves you.
This poem demonstrates empathy in many ways. It shows the section of the book when Lucia's new best friend is talking about people always seeing her at church. The poem is describing this scene and what happened at St. Mary's church. In the end of the poem is where the empathy is represented. The last line of the poem is "They should've introduced themselves to you." In the actual book, Jennifer says this because she feels bad that the kid at Mass didn't speak to her. She is showing empathy in this by telling her that she would've introduced herself to Lucia if she would have been there. Jennifer is being kind in telling her this to make her feel better. Overall, this poem is about Jennifer showing empathy to Lucia even in a situation that already happened.
