Found Poem:
Lucia? Are You There?
“Let me stay with you”
“We’ve been through this before”
“Ill hide no one will know”
“There’s fifty girls in here”
“But at least for tonight!”
“You have to leave before the morning bell
And how did you know this was my bed”
“I snuck in and looked for your suitcase”
“I gave him a kiss on the top of the head
Frankie curled up next to me
Having him there made me feel relaxed”
“I started dreaming
I could hear papa’s car engine
As it pulled into the driveway
Mama? Papa?
There you are!”

In the book The Red Umbrella Frankie and Lucia, brother and sister, go to America to escape the Cuban revolution. While in America, they are separated into different sleeping barracks. One night fairly close to their arrival, Frankie escapes from his dorm and goes to visit Lucia. He is lonely, he needs comfort that only his sister can give, the touch of family. Lucia understands this, she feels empathy towards Frankie here, and she feels the same pain he does and decides it’s worth taking the gamble of getting in trouble, if she can feel at home. The last line of the poem, “There you are”, if the poem alone was read some would comprehend that their parents are there, however in the book it’s not their parents it is the boys dorm leader looking for Frankie. He gets in trouble, and is supposed to be sent to the older boy’s school, however the boys dorm leader knows there father and feels empathy towards them and their story. He understands and wants to help them, so he does everything in his power to help them.
